One of the most common goals among dancers—especially in ballet—is improving turnout. While achieving better turnout can elevate technique and line, it’s vital to approach this goal with caution and proper guidance to prevent injury and build long-term strength.

What is Turnout?


Turnout refers to the outward rotation of the legs from the hips, allowing the feet and knees to face outward, ideally reaching a 180-degree line. This foundational aspect of ballet enhances balance, mobility, and aesthetic line—but when forced, it can lead to serious issues such as knee strain, hip impingement, and muscle imbalance.


The Safe Way to Improve Turnout


Here are some key strategies we teach at Inez Patricia School of Dance to safely enhance turnout:


1. Work from the Hips, Not the Feet


Turnout originates in the hip joints, not the knees or ankles. Forcing turnout by twisting the feet can put unnatural strain on ligaments and joints. Always begin rotation from the hip socket and allow it to naturally extend through the leg.


2. Strengthen Supporting Muscles


To support turnout, focus on strengthening the deep external rotators of the hips, glutes, core, and inner thighs. Exercises such as clamshells, bridges, Pilates leg circles, and theraband resistance routines can help build the necessary muscle control.


3. Stretch Smartly


Flexibility plays a role in turnout, but overstretching can do more harm than good. Gentle, consistent stretching targeting the hip flexors, hamstrings, and calves will encourage mobility without sacrificing stability. Always warm up thoroughly before stretching.


4. Use Proper Alignment


At our studio, we emphasize alignment first—turnout should never compromise posture. Knees should align over the toes, with a lifted spine and engaged core. This alignment protects your joints and builds sustainable technique.


5. Avoid “Wrenching” or Forcing


Forcing turnout can lead to long-term damage. We encourage dancers to work within their natural range and improve gradually. Progress in turnout is a process, not a quick fix.
